Mostar has just received another confirmation of how special it is: its famous stone arch over the Neretva has topped the list of the world’s most beautiful bridges chosen by the international magazine Time Out.
The editors explain that bridges are not just functional structures but symbols of cities, meetings and connection. Among many impressive examples around the planet, Mostar’s bridge stood out as the most striking for its architectural elegance and the powerful historical message it carries.
Built in the 16th century, the Old Bridge was Mostar’s trademark for centuries. It was destroyed in the war in 1993, and its rebuilding in the early 2000s, with the support of local and international partners, restored it as a symbol of hope and of a community reconnected. Today it is a must for travellers from all over the world, and the stage for the famous dives into the Neretva that make it even more recognisable.
The same list includes spectacular bridges such as the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, the picturesque Kapellbrücke in Switzerland, the exotic Golden Bridge in Vietnam and the Victoria Falls Bridge, which links two African countries beside the magnificent falls.
The recognition confirms once again that Mostar and its Old Bridge hold a special place on the world’s travel map, as a destination where history, architecture and emotion meet above the green Neretva.
