Most tourism films show a city the way it wants to be seen. Sarajevo does not need decoration; it just needs someone to point the camera at the right place at the right time. The Sarajevo City Tourist Board has done exactly that in its promotional film for the coming autumn and winter season, and the result is something you will not watch once and forget.
A film that sells an experience, not a city
“They say winter makes you cold. In Sarajevo it is somehow different.” The line the film opens with is not a marketing slogan. It is a truth known to anyone who has spent winter days in Sarajevo. Snow covering Baščaršija, steam rising from coffee in a džezva, a face you pass in the street that makes you wonder if you have met before: together they create an atmosphere the weather data cannot explain.
The film does not show Sarajevo as a list of sights to tick off. It shows it through feeling: smells drifting through the streets, chance encounters, conversations that start over coffee and go on for hours. And it shows it in winter, when the city is at its most intimate, when a visitor is not just a tourist but part of the everyday life going on all around.
Is winter Sarajevo’s best card for selling tourism through emotion?
Tourism built on emotional storytelling rather than lists of landmarks has in recent years delivered far better results than classic campaigns. Travellers who choose a destination for how it makes them feel stay longer, spend more and come back more often. And they tell others about it, because a feeling is easier to talk about than a list of museums.
Sarajevo has an advantage over many European cities here: the story around it is so rich and complex that every visitor takes something of their own from it. A promo film that understands this, that does not try to reduce the city to a brochure but shows it as it is, alive, warm and sometimes unexpected, is a step in the right direction.
Sarajevo in winter: what can visitors expect?
Winter Sarajevo offers an experience no summer visit can fully replace. Baščaršija under snow, the Sebilj fountain on a quiet white morning, the smell of roast chestnuts from street stalls, kafanas welcoming anyone looking for warmth and conversation, and Trebević with a view of a city that looks completely different when every roof is white.
Jahorina and Bjelašnica, an hour’s drive from the centre, give Sarajevo a ski and mountain dimension that makes it the only city in the region where you can ski in the morning and stroll through a historic old town in the afternoon.
Taste & Rate editors’ tip
Watch the film on the Sarajevo City Tourist Board’s YouTube channel, and if that first line catches you the way it should, Sarajevo may be your winter destination this season. And do not plan too much in advance. Sarajevo works best when you let yourself go with it.
Visit Sarajevo. Where winter warms all hearts.
