The family-run Brkić winery tells the story of Herzegovina beautifully: an enchanting region rich in the heritage of Žilavka and Blatina, grape varieties that thrive here as symbols of strength and endurance. But the story goes deeper than vineyards and cellars. It reaches into the heart of a family that chose wine as a way of life, not a business. The Brkić family of Čitluk does not simply produce wine; they raise it, look after it and pass it on, the way everything of value is passed on in this region: with pride, patience and love.
Josip Brkić and his son carry that heritage together, and that family thread gives Brkić wines a character industrial production cannot repeat. A 5/5 rating on Google and Tripadvisor is just the online reflection of what every visitor feels the moment they step into the cellar.
Five wines, five stories about Herzegovina
Brkić Žilavka: a native Herzegovinian grape grown on the rocky soil that has shaped it for centuries. Clear and fresh, with aromas of citrus, peach and Mediterranean herbs and a lively acidity that lasts to the last sip. Herzegovina in a glass, without embellishment.
Greda: a red wine named after Herzegovina’s rocky ridges. Dark, warm and rich, with tannins that open slowly and notes of forest fruit and spice that reveal themselves with every sip.
Plava Greda: Greda’s older sister, more complex and seductive. Long ageing in barriques gives it depth and a velvety structure that stays on the palate long after the glass is empty.
Mjesečar: a wine that steps outside the frame and asks for no approval, a creative take on the family’s wine language that shows tradition and experiment can share one bottle.
Grečica: light, fresh and easy to drink, a wine for moments without an occasion that become one as soon as you pour it.
Come, see, stay
Brkić is not a place you leave with a box of wine and forget. It is a place where you stay, literally and figuratively. Cellar and vineyard visits with tastings bring visitors back again and again, and accommodation right next to the winery lets you experience Herzegovina the way it deserves: slowly, with a morning walk through the vines and dinner with a glass of indescribable Žilavka. Announce your visit in advance and ask for a personal tasting: comparing a chilled Žilavka with a room-temperature Plava Greda in a cellar that smells of oak and history is an experience no wine list can replace.
