Some winery visits are just one stop on a tour, and some change the way you understand the bond between a place, a person and the wine in your glass. The Kozlović winery in the Vale valley, near Buje in north-western Istria, belongs to the second kind. Not because of the reputation it has built over four generations of the same family, but because of the way it welcomes you.

The story of the Kozlović winery, which began in 1904 and has never stopped

Vale is a valley. Not a town, not a tourist destination in the usual sense, but a piece of Istrian land the Kozlović family has farmed since 1904, when the first hectare of vineyard was planted and the first family house built. Across four generations the goal has stayed the same: to preserve native Istrian grape varieties while respecting the land and its heritage, to keep improving knowledge and technology in the vineyard and the cellar, and to guarantee the quality of the wine with the family name. Kozlović

Buje, the little town that crowns the area like a sentry on a hill, has long been known as one of Istria’s most fertile wine zones. Soil of flysch, limestone and clay, an altitude that brings big differences between day and night temperatures, vineyards facing south and south-west: together they create a terroir that cannot be copied anywhere else on the continent.

A winery with no workers, only family members who know every vine by heart

Jasmina Mirković welcomed us the way good hosts welcome dear guests: without ceremony, but with full attention. Every sentence she said about the winery, the vineyards and the wines carried the close knowledge that comes from years spent with this story, not like a guide repeating a learned script, but like someone who lives it.

The conversation turned naturally to the Kozlović logo, a symbol that looks simple on the label but carries deep meaning. Jasmina explained that it was designed to suggest togetherness and connection: two hands, two friends, two lines that meet, a sign that behind every wine there is a relationship. Between the winemaker and the vineyard. Between the wine and the guest. Between tradition and an innovation that does not change it but improves it.

Svinjon, a name for friends

Kozlović’s Sauvignon Blanc does not carry the grape’s name. It is called Svinjon, and the choice is no marketing whim. Jasmina explained that the name comes from slang, from the relaxed way of speaking that says it all when real friends are at the table. Svinjon is not a wine you explain; it is one you order and share.

In Svinjon, Sauvignon Blanc proves a winning choice, with its recognisable aromatic profile and mineral freshness that intrigues and wins you over at the same time. Kozlović In the glass it is exactly that: citrus and green herbs, a freshness that sparks conversation and a minerality that makes you smell it once more before you drink. Svinjon has as much character as its name, and it turns out to pair perfectly with the Istrian flavours (cured meat, cheese, herbs) that accompanied the tasting.

Malvazija, where everything begins and where it always returns

From the start, the Kozlović winery has been a byword for fresh Istrian Malvazija and Momjan Muscat. The Malvazija we were served confirms it right away: lively, fruity, with the particular mineral note that the flysch and limestone soil of Vale gives. It is not a heavy Malvazija that tires you, but one that refreshes and pairs so naturally with Istrian food that you wonder whether the wine and the soil created each other. Istra

Talking about Malvazija with Jasmina also revealed a detail few visitors know: the first Malvazija vines at Santa Lucia were planted in 1961, in a vineyard at 240 metres above sea level near Buje. That soil, counted among the most valuable vineyard sites in Croatia, gives the Malvazija a dimension the Vale Malvazija does not have, and you taste it from the first drop.

Santa Lucia, when wine becomes a collector’s item

Santa Lucia Malvazija is a different category: a wine with expressive varietal character, elegant ripe fruit and minerality, a collector’s wine that can age for ten years or more. If the Vale Malvazija is a wine for the moment, Santa Lucia is a wine for patience, and every sip proves it. Complexity that unfolds in the glass, a finish that does not fade and a golden colour that tells you at once this was not made in a hurry.

The food served with the tasting, homemade bread the family kneads and bakes, carefully chosen cured meats and cheeses from local Istrian producers, was not decoration. It was an equal part of the experience that gave each wine new context and revealed nuances no expert description can convey without the right bite alongside.

Why this tasting is a lesson for the tourism sector

What the Kozlović winery does with its tastings is not just good service; it is a masterclass in building a destination brand. Every part of the visit tells one consistent story: the logo about togetherness, Svinjon named from everyday speech, the homemade bread kneaded on the estate, and Jasmina and the rest of the staff talking about the winery as if it were their own family.

The Kozlović winery

Visitors who come to Istria for Kozlović do not come only for the wine. They come for the story and take it home in a bottle and in their memory. That is branding you cannot buy with a campaign; it is built over decades of honest work, authenticity and understanding that a guest does not buy a product but an experience that changes them.

We want to tell every future story the way the Kozlović winery does: consistently, with love, without hurry, and through people who live it.
