5 reasons the Banja Luka riverside promenade belongs on your list
- A view of Kastel fortress from river level, one of the finest urban views in the city.
- A promenade set right down by the water: the Vrbas closer than ever.
- A new summer stage and amphitheatre, a cultural space that lives all year round.
- More than 100 new trees and landscaped squares, a green oasis in the heart of the city.
- Part of six kilometres of landscaped riverbank: a walk that starts in the centre and ends at the Terme.
The Vrbas has a new address for walking, meeting friends and evenings out. The Banja Luka riva (riverside promenade), officially opened on 25 September 2026, is a new stretch of landscaped riverbank between the City Bridge and the Venecija Bridge that gives Banja Luka what every river city deserves: real access to its water.
A promenade that changed how you see the city
The new section is about 1.5 kilometres long, and together with the parts landscaped earlier Banja Luka now has more than six kilometres of promenade along the Vrbas. The path runs right down by the river, so in places you can get much closer to the Vrbas than before. You do not walk past the river. You walk with it.
With new planting, two landscaped squares and terraces, the area becomes a new place to relax, and the greatest value of the project is that the city has finally reached its river.
The view from the promenade to Kastel fortress, the oldest structure in Banja Luka, is one of those urban views that becomes a postcard of the city: history and modern infrastructure in a single frame, with the emerald Vrbas flowing below.
What the promenade offers
More than 100 trees have been planted, mostly willows, and the bank has been reinforced along the path. The space is designed for a range of uses. A new summer stage and amphitheatre by the Faculty of Law give the promenade a cultural dimension that makes it more than a footpath: a public space that lives in every season.
Almost every kilometre has its own attraction: a bridge, a walkway, a park or a beach. Banja Luka now offers plenty to do in every season.
From Vrućica to the centre: six kilometres of story
The promenade is not an isolated section; it is the newest part of a continuous walkway system that runs from the city centre to the Terme and Švedska plaža. Each part has its own character, historic by Kastel, recreational by the Terme, urban and cultural on the new promenade, but together they tell the story of a city that has finally returned to its river.
Taste & Rate editors’ tip
Visit the promenade on a sunny autumn afternoon or in the evening, when the lights give the Vrbas a special glow and Kastel fortress in the background takes on a golden tone no photograph can catch.
