Kastel Fortress – Banja Luka

Banja Luka’s oldest cultural and historical monument

5 reasons Kastel belongs on your list

  1. The oldest historic site in Banja Luka.
  2. Layers of history in every metre: Roman, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods in one complex.
  3. CASTRA caffe, a new chapter of an old story with one of the best views of the Vrbas.
  4. Safikada’s grave, Banja Luka’s best-known legend, right next to the fortress.
  5. Free and open to all: a living cultural space that welcomes visitors and hosts events all year.

Every city has a heart. Banja Luka’s is made of stone, and it is called Kastel. The largest fortress and oldest historic monument in the Banja Luka area has stood on the left bank of the Vrbas since time immemorial, witnessing every empire, army and era that passed through, and none has managed to conquer or destroy it completely. Kastel is still here, keeper of the memories on which the future is built.

From the Romans to today: a story thousands of years long

There are no exact records of when Kastel was founded, but plenty of evidence of a prehistoric settlement on the site. Along the Vrbas and the famous salt road, which ran from the Adriatic coast at Solin through Banja Luka to today’s Croatia and Serbia, the Romans built a chain of forts, and the largest was this one, called Castra. A charter from 1525 says the name Banja Luka comes from the fortress, then known as Castel Nostro Bagna Luca, which gives it a special place in the history of the city’s very name.

After the Romans, Kastel passed through Hungarian and Ottoman hands. The Turks made the most important additions, extending the walls, towers and underground tunnels, and the largest reconstruction, from 1714 to 1716, followed the system of the famous French military engineer Vauban, who revolutionised fortification across Europe. The latest renovation was completed in 2025, when Kastel was lit up and gained new importance for tourism in Banja Luka.

Inside walls that remember everything

Kastel is not a museum piece behind glass but a living space that welcomes visitors, hosts cultural events and offers one of the best views of the Vrbas the city has. A spacious inner courtyard, towers you can explore, walls right by the river and ground that hides Roman, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian layers in every metre make Kastel a place you cannot see in an hour, and one that always gives you a reason to come back.

Safikada’s grave, Banja Luka’s best-known legend, is right next to the fortress, which makes the visit doubly worthwhile for anyone who loves history woven with romantic stories.

CASTRA: a café with soul and a view you will not forget

Inside the Kastel complex is CASTRA caffe, a name not chosen by chance. It refers directly to the Roman name of the fortress and continues a long tradition of hospitality within these walls. Restaurant Kazamat also plays a big part here: for generations of Banja Luka locals it has been a favourite place for lunch or coffee by the Vrbas with a touch of history.

In 2026 CASTRA carries the story on, with a river view few cafés in the city can match and stone walls that make every coffee last a little longer and feel a little different. Sitting in CASTRA watching the Vrbas, with the fortress walls behind you, is the kind of experience you remember not for the coffee but for the moment.

Taste & Rate editors’ tip

Visit Kastel in the morning, when the fortress is quiet and the Vrbas shows itself in its true light. Finish with a coffee at CASTRA looking out over the river and, if you are with someone dear, stop by Safikada’s grave right next to the fortress. Entry to Kastel is free. 📍 Centre of Banja Luka, left bank of the Vrbas.
